Cape Hatteras is home to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the nation. It was nearly taken by the Atlantic Ocean but was saved in 1999 - in a huge project that literally moved the entire lighthouse at once.
Another highlight of the Outer Banks is Roanoke Island, the location of the Lost Colony. This colony was the first English colony in the New World, although shortly after its first settlement the entire population would return to England. The second settlement, overseen by John White, would have a much different ending. When White left the colony to return to England for supplies, he would return to find the settlement seemingly abandoned. The only evidence found was the word "Croatoan" carved into a post in the fort and "Cro" in a nearby tree - Croatoan being the name of a tribe that lived nearby. Their fate remains a mystery to this day.
There are many other islands and towns located along the Outer Banks, including Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo, and Wanchese. Don't forget, Ocracoke is just one of many popular tourist locations!
